Last Sunday saw the concurrent running of all the UK cyclo-cross regional championships. With Sarah Lomas and Connie Hayes out injured, and Jersey-based Emily Bridson not having a local regional competition, Liv AWOL only had riders competing in the combined Eastern & South Eastern Regionals event hosted by Welwyn Wheelers at Stanborough Park.
As a warm-up, U16 rider Iona Moir, competed in the Central League Round 11 held near Kettering on the Saturday before and comfortably took her first cyclo-cross win.
On Sunday, with a larger field across all categories, and a course less technical than experienced in the Trophy Series races, it was a surprising weekend double win for Iona Moir, edging out Liv AWOL teammates Charlotte McGreevy and Harley Pell (riding for CC Ashwell in cyclo-cross) into 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
In the Women’s Junior category, Lauren Higham took second place, being edged off the top podium spot by Elspeth Grace (Welwyn Wheelers).
On road, Liv AWOL had two riders racing in the 3rd round of the Lee Valley Fus Gas Winter Series, with podium spot for Savannah Hewson and 6th for Rosie Wallace. Savannah tweeted after the race, “3rd place in today’s
@fullgascycling winter series. Shoutout to Rosie who couldn’t seem to stop attacking. Well done to my bike for keeping with it.”
This weekend sees the penultimate event in the Cyclo-cross National Trophy Series in Bradford. Be warned, snow is expected! Anything could happen.
